ACES buffer is the zwitterionic biological buffer N‑(2‑acetamido)‑2‑aminoethanesulfonic acid, one of Good’s buffers, used to maintain pH near neutrality in biochemical and molecular biology experiments.
Commonly used to prepare buffers for electrophoresis (agarose and polyacrylamide gels), isoelectric focusing, and protein or enzyme assays in the pH 6–7 region.
Also employed in cell culture media and diagnostic reagents where a low‑metal‑binding, zwitterionic buffer is preferred near neutral pH.
